Supporting Recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake

Engaging in aid activities immediately after a disaster

Continuously supplying medical and pharmaceutical products

Immediately after the Great East Japan Earthquake struck, we devoted our best efforts to delivering necessary medical and pharmaceutical supplies as promptly as possible, making contact with medical institutions in the disaster-affected areas, the relevant authorities, ophthalmological associations, etc. Santen employees in these areas delivered medical and pharmaceutical supplies to facilities in need of such supplies, and helped affected medical institutions and pharmacies in their disaster recovery work.

Sending recovery work volunteers

The earthquake and tsunami severely devastated the vast areas severely, so a great many helping hands were needed. In response to this situation, Santen called for volunteers from among the employees, and sent seven squads of volunteers, amounting to about 60 volunteers in total, to the coastal areas of Iwate Prefecture over a period of about three months from September to November 2011-during which the number of volunteers was expected to decline-to engage in disaster recovery activities.

Providing relief funds

Hoping that the disaster-affected areas would recover and be reconstructed as soon as possible, Santen as a company made a donation of 100 million yen. Additionally, Santen used the matching gift program, whereby the Company adds to a donation by an employee the same amount of money and donates the total amount, ultimately donating a further 40 million yen, including relief funds given by employees at Group companies in Japan and abroad.

Employee union engaging in continuous activities

To support the recovery of the areas severely affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent tsunami on March 11, 2011, the SGWU(Santen Group Worker's Union) has continued to engage in volunteer activities by sending union members to the areas. Until 2017, the union has sent a total of 76 volunteers in five squads with the mediation of the NPO Tono Magokoro Net based in Tono City, Iwate Prefecture.

Contributing to an Increase in Employment of Persons with Disabilities

The Company established Claire Co., Ltd. in 1997 as a special subsidiary that gives special consideration to the employment of people with disabilities in order to promote and stabilize the employment of people with disabilities and support their independence while actively promoting diversity.

In 2017, in order to further expand employment, we will set up a Claire sales office in Osaka Prefecture, aiming to realize a society where people with and without disabilities can coexist and live in harmony.

In 2023, we accepted a total of 26 interns from special needs schools aiming for future employment in companies. From this group, we hired several individuals. Additionally, a total of 114 people from government agencies, prefectures, other private companies, and support organizations involved in disability employment visited our company to observe Claire’s operations. They engaged in discussions about the current state of disability employment and our company’s initiatives.
